THE CHOICE OF OUR MATERIALS
At Luz we create products from quality materials, ethically sourced and sustainably produced in European factories certified by the GOTS and Oeko Tex labels.
Our two flagship materials are: organic cotton and E conyl ®.
Organic cotton is our emblematic material, the one with which Luz was created. It is a natural material , from the sowing of the seed to the harvest of the flower. Unlike classic cotton, it is grown without pesticides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers, or GMOs.
Producers use natural solutions to grow the flower without harming the surrounding ecosystems. For cotton to be organic, the soils must not have been treated for at least three years and more must not be treated during the process, this is how the soils do not become depleted. Healthy soil and an ethical production chain also allow workers to have no health problems related to chemicals.
In addition, organic cotton is water-efficient; it uses 50% less than ordinary cotton; and energy-efficient, reduced throughout the chain.
Socially, the GOTS label also certifies that the people working for our production are properly paid, that the working conditions are ideal and that there is no child labor.
Econyl® is a recycled nylon thread , so it is its eco-responsible equivalent. It has the same properties of elasticity and resistance. It is also chlorine resistant and protects against UV rays.
We chose this material at Luz in order to combat the environmental catastrophe that is the waste from so-called “ghost” fishing nets at sea. In fact, they represent more than 10% of the waste found on the seabed and 70% of macro plastic waste.
So, instead of degrading to produce microparticles for years and threatening marine life, these nets are crushed and melted to produce Econyl®. 10,000 tons of Econyl® produced correspond to 70,000 barrels of crude oil saved and 51,100 tons of CO2 avoided compared to conventional nylon. Indeed, just like organic cotton, Econyl® saves energy on the production chain, up to 80%.
This is a 100% recycled and recyclable yarn with an “infinite” life cycle. It thus aims for zero waste .
With this article, we wanted to share with you in more detail our eco-friendly approach and more particularly our flagship materials in order to be as transparent as possible.
