GOTS'ique swimsuits and bodysuits: the chic and responsible spirit
The GOTS label? What is it?
The acronym GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. It concerns textile products but in the cotton, wool, hemp and silk categories.
It is an international label for organic textiles , created in 2008 by a collaborative working group between Germany (Natural Textile Industry Association), the United Kingdom (Soil Association), the United States (Organic Trade Association) and Japan (Japan Organic Cotton Association).
Since the 2000s, the ecological and health problem has been growing and many clothing companies (from its transformation to raw material) have started to think about clothing models using "clean" processes and human values combining small productions and ancestral know-how. It is natural that Luz has chosen to get involved in this adventure for its swimsuits , bodysuits and beachwear .
The GOTS label in detail.
This designation has two levels of requirement.
For organic textiles, at least 95% of the textile fibers must come from organic farming. For the rest, synthetic and/or artificial is allowed. As for viscose. On the other hand, it is impossible to combine in the base material, organic cotton for example and its cousin not from organic farming.
For textiles made from organic textile fibres, 70% to 95% of the fibres will meet the organic origin or conversion certificate (i.e. a company in the process of ecological transformation proving proven involvement and action in favour of ecological production). The rest of the material can be artificial, synthetic, but cannot exceed 10%. A small difference for socks, tights and jogging bottoms, for which 25% of non-organic is valid. Here too, mixing organic fibre with the same non-organic base product is prohibited.
As for the chemicals that are found -too- frequently in the manufacturing processes of organic or biological textiles, the GOTS label refuses all aromatic solvents, as well as chlorophenol and formaldehyde. No fiber from GMO crops either; no more than cotton, hemp or wool that has undergone fungicide treatments, coloring by heavy metals or fluorocarbons.
For soda, this is authorized only on condition that it is a recycled solvent. For additional accessories on clothing, plastics can be used unless they belong to PVC; buttons, straps, clasps, such as certain details of Luz swimsuits.
And the human dimension? At Luz we are strongly attached to it.
The GOTS standard highlights social criteria found in the International Labour Organization (ILO) convention.
The managers of textile companies claiming the label, commit to respecting the rights of employees, refuse forced and/or undeclared labor, validate standardized working hours, prohibit and absolutely condemn the work of minors. Jobs are stabilized, decent wages according to the level of GDP of each country.
This is totally summed up by the identity of Luz Collection:
Swimsuits and bodysuits are part of an eco-design world, a modern, avant-garde and committed fashion .
The GOTS label ensures the production of organic cotton (zero pesticides, zero GMOs, zero chemical fertilizers) in order to respect the land producing the raw material.
But that's not all, the human dimension takes into account respect under human rights for the value of work and the recognition of those who produce. Trade is therefore fair and the brand's swimsuit or bodysuit models meet all these expectations, both ethical and ecological.
GOTS has since become the internationally recognised label for natural and organic textiles . It has indeed provided social benefits for employees, whilst maintaining and improving the principles of organic cultivation.
